Compensation is always top consideration when looking to make a career move. The salary range in the sales industry can vary significantly, sometimes even for similar roles. Obviously, you want to maximize your earning potential and increase your salary each time you take a new position.

HIRE BETTER TODAY

The following are four areas to focus on when looking for higher-paying sales jobs:

1. Research Industry Pay Statistics

Your first step to finding a sales job that will pay you more is to perform research into the types of sales jobs that pay the most. A simple online search can tell you a lot about the average salaries for your current sales job and for other roles you could potentially qualify for. Some of the websites where you could find pay statistics include:

  • Government of Canada website
  • LinkedIn
  • Job boards
  • Google search

Use this information to get a better sense of how compensation works in your area of sales. Identify potential roles you could move into to boost your salary.

2. Research Companies With Better Compensation Plans

There are some companies that are known for paying better than others. If you want to make more money, you may want to focus on job opportunities with these organizations, but also expect there to be more competition for higher-paying sales roles.

3. Consider the Type of Compensation

How a company pays its salespeople can have a big impact on earning potential. If you want a higher-paying role, you may need to consider one with less of a base salary and greater potential through commission. If you take a sales role with a defined annual salary, you are limiting how much you can make. There is less risk, but also less potential reward. Commission-based compensation gives you greater earning potential.

4. Understand the Characteristics High-Paying Companies Want

There is a correlation between the type of skills and experience companies expect candidates to have for higher-paying roles. Make note of common factors and compare them to your current situation. Do your skills and experience match up with higher-paying roles? If not, which skills, knowledge, certifications, and experience do you need to gain in order to become qualified for higher-paying jobs?

Remember that just because you want a higher-paying job doesn’t mean you are qualified just yet. There are some steps you may need to complete to qualify for a sales job that pays more.
