We all want to impress recruiters. If we can impress them before we meet them, it’s a sure-fire way to not only secure an in-person interview, but also gain an advantage over other candidates vying for the same jobs.

So, how do you impress a recruiter? There are lots of ways to do it beyond what you put on your resume. Here are some creative ways to impress a recruiter or hiring manager:

1. Have a Strong Professional Online Presence

Your online presence matters. Do you know what type of search results and information appears when someone searches for you online? You should, if you are applying for jobs. A strong professional online presence will impress recruiters. Have a good headshot and make sure there is nothing online that will disqualify you from the interview process.

2. Have a Large Social Media Following

Being known within your industry and having some name notoriety can make a big difference today. Having a strong social media following communicates that you have something important to say, are engaging, and are a strong communicator. These are all traits hiring companies are looking for in candidates, regardless of industry.

3. Publish

Publishing online and becoming a thought leader shows you are dedicated to your craft. It shows you are an active participant in your industry, you are up to date with the latest trends, issues, and topics. It also shows you have a passion for what you do. Recruiters can gain insight into who you are and what you can do professionally by reading what you publish on LinkedIn, your blog, and other sites online.

4. Get a Great Referral

Having a strong referral or someone who is willing to champion your candidacy will get your recruiter’s attention. Recruiters are more likely to give you consideration if you are referred to them by someone. See if you have connections to the organizations you want to work for.
