The type of sales you do will have an impact on your approach to your career. It will also change how you prepare for a job interview. Medical sales interviews can be very different than an interview to work in phone sales, retail, or B2B sales.

Here, our sales recruiters offer some great tips to ace your next medical sales job interview:

1. Learn about the company you’re interviewing with

Research is an important part of any interview preparation. Learn as much as you can about the medical sales company before the interview. Learn about how they do things, their approach to sales, and what makes them unique in the marketplace. Many companies will ask you why you want to work for their organization. Learning about the company will also give you a good indication about whether they are a company you want to work for.

2. Learn about the products/services you’d be selling

Having a good understanding of the medical products and services you’d be selling is essential. You’ll most likely be asked to pitch a product or two as part of the interview process. Learning about how to approach selling these products before the interview will help you develop insights and better apply your answers directly to the company and its products.

3. Put your sales skills on display

Medical sales is a highly competitive industry. Companies are looking for candidates who can hold their own and be competitive. You’ll need to sell in a highly competitive space. The best way to show you are up for the challenge is to show off your sales skills during the interview. Expect to be asked to do a role-playing or selling exercise.

4. Dress the part

Medical and pharma sales tend to be more formal than other sales industries, so make sure you dress the part. Dress your best and show them you look like you belong. Be on time and cordial. Have a firm handshake, maintain eye contact and show a confident demeanour.
