Job interviews are demanding. You will be asked a lot of challenging questions – many of which take careful preparation and time to develop a strong answer.

“What can you bring to this role?” is a common question you can expect to hear from hiring managers in the sales industry.

Interviewers and sales recruiters ask this question for a couple reasons. They want to hear what you can actually bring to the role, outside of what is listed on your resume. They also ask the question to learn about what you can offer that other candidates cannot. It’s a way for them to differentiate between candidates and see who can offer the most.

For you, it’s an ample opportunity for you to communicate why you are the ideal candidate for the job. They key is how you answer the question. You don’t want to be too brief and not effectively communicate why you are the best candidate. You also don’t want to be too long-winded.

How to Answer “What Can You Bring to This Role?”

Crafting the perfect answer to this question will take some thought on your part. It’s important for you to do as much research as possible about the role, understand what it entails, and then consider your skills and experience.

Ask yourself:

  1. What skills and experience do you bring to the role? Are there specific skills and abilities that make you an ideal candidate for the role?
  2. What makes you different? Do you have unique skills or specific skills that other candidates don’t have?
  3. How can your unique skills make a difference in the role? What is it about you that will enable you to make a difference if you are chosen for the role?
  4. How can you add value to the role? What added value can you bring to the role that is currently missing?

Reflecting upon these questions will help you develop a number of strong points to create your answer. Focus on your top three traits/skills that you bring to the role. You can elaborate more on other points if prompted by the interviewer.
