The question “What is your greatest weakness?” is one of the most common and dreaded questions asked in job interviews, particularly in sales jobs. This question can be tricky because while you want to be honest, you also want to present yourself in the best light possible. You don’t want to state a weakness that could put your candidacy in jeopardy.

Be honest – speak about a real weakness

While you want to present yourself in the best light, you also don’t want to lie or exaggerate. Be honest about your weaknesses, but also be mindful of how you present them. You don’t want to come across as someone who is incapable of doing the job or someone who is not confident in their abilities. It’s best to speak about a weakness you’ve overcome.

In sales, certain skills are essential, such as communication, negotiation, and customer service. Try to avoid mentioning weaknesses related to these skills. Instead, focus on a weakness that is not directly related to the job but is still relevant. For example, if you struggle with organization, you could mention this weakness but also explain how you have been working on improving your organizational skills.

Show self-awareness

When answering this question, show that you are self-aware and understand your weaknesses. Don’t make excuses or blame others for your weaknesses. Instead, take responsibility for them and explain how you are working to improve. This is an essential part of successfully answering this question.

Explain how you are working to improve

After mentioning your weakness, explain how you are working to improve in this area. This shows that you are proactive and willing to take steps to overcome your weaknesses. Be specific with the steps you’ve taken to make yourself better.

Here’s an example of a good answer to this question if your weakness is focus and organization:

“My greatest weakness is that I tend to get too involved in the details of the sales process and can sometimes lose sight of the bigger picture. However, I am aware of this weakness, and I have been working on improving my ability to prioritize tasks and focus on the most important functions that will lead to sales. I have also been working on delegating tasks to others to ensure that I am not getting bogged down in the details. Despite this weakness, I believe that my strong communication and interpersonal skills make me a strong candidate for this sales job. I am confident in my ability to build strong relationships with clients and exceed their expectations.”
