Mature job seekers can face a challenging path. They say age is only a number. However, it is a number that can make it more difficult for you to compete for sales jobs. You are often up against younger, more energetic and eager job candidates, and potential bias against you. Many employers are hesitant to hire mature job seekers because they are concerned you will be stuck in your ways or you are not up with the latest technology.

These are only a few things that can make your job search more difficult. To help you be successful in your search, our sales recruiters have put together these tips for mature job seekers in sales:

1. Play to Your Strengths

As a mature job seeker, you have some advantages over younger candidates. You can bring experience, insight and a unique perspective to the company. You can also show how you’ve been loyal to previous employers. A track record of working in the same role for a number of years and the desire to do so for a hiring company can be attractive. Many younger candidates job hop, forcing companies to go through the hiring process again in a few short years.

2. Stick to Relevant Experience on Your Resume

Avoid aging yourself by listing your complete job history on your resume. Stick to outlining your recent and relevant experience. You may want to have your resume reviewed by a professional resume writer to refine your focus.

3. Communicate Experience Without Showing Your Age

While a company can’t ask about your age, they may allude to it in the interview. You can overcome this by taking an energetic approach to the job interview. Communicate to them you are up to date with the latest trends in your industry and show your youthful side.

4. Work with a Sales Recruiter

Sales recruiters can help you vastly improve your job search. They can provide you with tips for your resume, how to interview successfully, and can help find hiring companies that are an ideal match for you as a mature sales job candidate.
