If you are looking for a sales job in 2018, it’s important to be the best sales candidate possible. As sales recruiters, we know you will face steep competition for high profile positions, and you need to be at your best to improve your chances of getting a sales job offer.

Being the best sales candidate has a lot more to do with just what is on your resume. How you conduct yourself and manage the interview process are telltale signs about you as a person. You may have the best resume and experience, but if you don’t present yourself well, you could lose out on the job.

To help you with your job search, we’ve put together these tips to help you be the best sales candidate:

1. You’re honest

Most people lie, or at least stretch the truth, on their resumes and during job interviews. They do it to gain an advantage over other candidates and to generate interest. It’s no secret companies don’t want to hire someone based on false pretences. The cost of a poor hire is expensive.

Being honest and upfront about your skills, experience, and career objectives will be welcomed. Plus, as a candidate, getting a job based on your actual skills and experience ensures you find a role that is well suited for you.

2. You’re on time

No one likes to be kept waiting. Being late for a job interview or a call is a major no-no. It’s important to be on time and prompt with all communications you have with hiring managers and recruiters. If they email or call you, get back to them as soon as possible.

3. You’re a good communicator

Being a good communicator is an important skill to have in sales. It’s important to prove your communication skills during each interaction with hiring companies. This includes informing companies if you are no longer interested in the job. Don’t go dark halfway through the interview process. Or, if you have an issue about something, make sure to express your concerns.

These are all things you can control, yet so many candidates fall short. Hiring is often about the intangibles. Do your best to be a good candidate and good things will happen.
