Sales jobs can be highly competitive at all levels. Whether you are looking to break into the industry with an entry-level position, are trying to move up to a senior sales role, or are looking to make the move into sales management, you need to ensure you leave the best impression possible on sales recruiters and managers.

We all know there are certain things we should say and do during the interview process. But what about the things we shouldn’t do? There are just as many things you should avoid doing – the things that will quickly take you from serious contender status to out of the running for the job.

Here are 4 things to avoid doing when applying for sales jobs:

1. Being Late

Being late for an interview can kill your chances immediately. Being late is a reflection upon how you approach your work and a sign that you could be late for client appointments and meetings if you were hired.

Always aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Give yourself extra time to get to the interview location. Factor in traffic, weather, and other potential delays.

2. Lack of Preparation

You need to put time into job interview preparation if you want to win the sales job. Lack of preparation shows during the interview. You not only need to be well versed in answering common sales job interview questions, you also need to know the company, and have a good understanding of how your skills and abilities make you an ideal candidate for the position.

3. Not Presenting Well

It’s important to look the part and be confident during your interactions with interviews. You not only need to dress the part, but you also need to maintain good body language, calm your nerves, and make good eye contact throughout the interview. How you act during the job interview could be insight into how you act around clients. Make sure you present well.

4. Failure to Communicate Your Interest in the Job

Appearing disinterested is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Many sales candidates don’t even realize they are doing it. In addition to doing standard things like turning off your phone and being focused on the interview, you should also ask questions about the company and job to show you have a strong interest in the role.
