Everyone wants to get promoted. For many sales reps, this means moving into a more senior sales position, getting more high profile accounts, or even making the leap to sales manager. Getting promoted takes hard work, involves making the right career decisions, and putting in the time.

Here are 5 tips from sales recruiters that can help you get promoted and take the next step in your sales career:

1. Hit your targets

The first step to getting promoted is to do a great job in your current position. Put the time and effort into hitting your sales targets, go above and beyond when necessary, and strive to be a top employee, even if you are in an entry-level position. Show your potential.

2. Invest in yourself

Continuing education is very important. Establish yourself as a lifelong learner. Take advantage of opportunities to take courses, mentorship and coaching programs, and invest in ways to expand your skill set. Company leaders will take notice of your initiative.

3. Be a team player

Demonstrate your ability to be a team player. Be easy to work with, take a collaborative approach and be willing to assist other sales reps. This allows you to show your leadership abilities and your dedication to helping the team and company succeed, not just yourself.

4. Network

Make it a point to meet as many people as possible in your department, and within the organization. The more people who know you, the better. Go to company parties and events, join committees, and make it a point to introduce yourself when the opportunity arises. This will help you get noticed, and it will give you an edge when it comes time to promote from within.

5. Make it known

One often overlooked aspect of getting a promotion is making it known. If you are interested in moving up within the company, make sure your direct manager is aware. We are not saying that you have to broadcast your desire to be promoted through the company, just make sure the right people know. Many people get overlooked as a candidate for promotion because they “don’t show interest.”
