Everybody has a unique blend of sales skills, but some selling techniques work better than others. Rather than simply providing you with a list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to the competitive world of sales, we’ve compiled a list of the five most effective selling techniques. Along with this list is also an explanation of why these specific techniques are the most effective at getting you the sales that you’ve always wanted.

1. Specificity

Even though you may have a general structure to your sales pitches, you have to remember that specificity is the key to success. One of the best selling techniques is the ability to cater your presentation to your customers. You want the customer to feel like an individual who is important to you rather than just another number that you add to your list of successes for the day. Take the time to understand each customer’s specific needs and then make sure that your sales pitch addresses those needs. Your product has to be the solution to all of your customers’ unique problems.

2. Know Your Stuff

In order to understand your customers’ needs, you have to do some research. This research includes not only a search on each individual client, but also on prospective clients. You have to be able to examine raw data and find trends in customers’ needs. You should also know the ins and outs of your company and its unique products compared to the rest of the products on the market. One of the best ways to build trust with your customer is by offering them an education when you explain your productsto them. Guiding them towards their decision by providing them with knowledge will give your customer confidence in the feeling that they are making their own decision to go along with your company’s products.

3. Improvisation

Even though you need to do some research and preparation before delivering your sales presentation, you should also understand the importance of improvisation. Sure, you do need to rehearse a general sales pitch so that you have some sort of foundation to your sales approach. However, the worst thing you could possibly do is to sound unenthusiastic, unconfident, and just plain boring. If you are not able to alter your words to fit each individual client’s needs, then you are not doing your job correctly. Improvisation works because it allows you to give each customer a unique selling experience, which helps you build their trust.

4. Organization

Another important selling skill that you can implement is a systematic approach that allows your goals to be realized. One of the best ways to achieve a direct improvement is by setting yourself realistic goals and deadlines. This requires organization. Make sure that you spend some time every day on learning more about your prospects and writing down how many you want to target the next day. Use a planner and create specific appointments every week to ensure that you meet the deadline that you set for yourself. Organization skills are crucial for improving your selling skills because they increase your motivation and show direct results.

5. Listening Skills

Finally, the most important selling technique that you could possibly have is the ability to listen. Listening to your customer and truly taking the time to understand their needs and desires is a crucial component of catering your sales pitch to them and earning their trust. Additionally, listening to senior sales representatives and your boss is incredibly important for helping you grow as a sales person. Be humble and take every opportunity for growth that you can.
